Three programmable presets sound like a convenience feature until a desk gets shared. In a hoteling setup, a shift-based operation, or any office where two people use the same station on different days, the preset keypad is what makes a height-adjustable desk actually get used rather than parked at one height forever. This Steelcase Series 7 L-shaped adjustable desk stores three positions on a keypad under the front edge, so a user can drop into their own seated height, jump to their standing height, and get back again without hunting for the right position each time.
This pre-owned desk is the left return configuration. The main run is 24 inches deep by 80 inches wide, the return is 24 inches deep by 60 inches wide, and the inside corner is scooped into a concave computer corner that seats the user inside the L rather than across from it. The worksurface is off white high-pressure laminate with a fine speckled pattern and a softly rolled edge, mounted on a black three-leg steel base with a crossbeam tying the legs together beneath the top. This unit adjusts between 22.5 inches and 48 inches, a range that starts noticeably lower than a standard 29 inch desk.
Series 7 was developed by Details, a Steelcase company, and it is built to a commercial specification rather than a consumer one. Three-stage synchronized lifting columns with integral shrouding are run from a central control box, so all three legs travel in step and the corner stays level even when the load on the two wings is unequal. The columns move at 1.7 inches per second, the soft-stop motor ramps acceleration at both ends of the travel so nothing on the surface shifts, and the desk stops at any point in the range as well as at the stored presets. Steelcase rates the three-leg configuration at 540 pounds of distributed load including the worksurface itself.
