Muuto Fiber Used Swivel Armchair, Black
Muuto is the Copenhagen design house behind some of the most recognizable Scandinavian furniture of the last twenty years, and the Fiber series by the Danish duo Iskos-Berlin is one of its best known. Launched in 2014, Fiber takes its name from the shell material: a composite of roughly 25 percent FSC certified wood fiber blended with polypropylene, injection molded in a single piece. The wood content gives the shell a soft matte finish and a warmer, less plasticky feel than a standard molded chair, and Iskos-Berlin’s work is held in collections including MoMA.
This is the Fiber Armchair on the swivel base, the widest Fiber shell mounted on a black four star aluminum base that rotates a full 360 degrees. The shell sweeps up on both sides into integrated armrests molded as part of the same piece, so nothing is bolted on to work loose. The base runs on glides rather than casters, which means the chair pivots freely toward a screen or a colleague but stays put on the floor when it is left alone.
Iskos-Berlin drew this shell to hold the sitter rather than simply support them, with a deep waterfall seat, a curved lumbar zone and arms that land at natural forearm height. It works equally well as a meeting room chair, a reception seat or a comfortable secondary chair in a private office. The shell is a single molded piece with no seams to split, it wipes clean with a damp cloth, and the wood fiber composite is fully recyclable. That combination of a durable surface and a genuinely comfortable shaped shell is why the Fiber series turns up in cafeterias, meeting rooms, breakout areas, lobbies and dining spaces alike.
