Muuto Fiber Used Armchair w Gas Lift and Castors, Gray
Muuto is the Copenhagen design house responsible for a good deal of what people picture when they picture modern Scandinavian furniture, and the Fiber series is the work of the Danish duo Iskos-Berlin. Fiber launched in 2014 and takes its name from the shell material, a composite of roughly 25 percent FSC certified wood fiber blended with polypropylene and injection molded as a single piece. The wood content is what gives the shell its soft matte surface and a warm, tactile feel in the hand.
This is the full office specification of the Fiber Armchair, finished in a soft warm gray on a matching gray five star aluminum base with castors and a pneumatic gas lift. The wide shell sweeps up at the sides into armrests that are part of the same molded piece, so there is nothing bolted on that can work loose. The seat travels through roughly a five inch range on the gas lift, which covers standard desk height at the bottom of its travel and a raised perch at the top, and the whole chair swivels through 360 degrees.
The rolling base is what moves the Fiber out of the dining category and into meeting rooms and workstations. People can pull in to a table, turn toward a screen and push back again without lifting the chair off the floor, and one gas lift chair suits a range of table heights. The ergonomic work is done by the shell shape itself: a deep waterfall front edge, a curved lumbar zone and arms that meet the forearm at a natural height. The shell is a single molded piece with no seams to split, it wipes clean with a damp cloth, and the wood fiber composite is fully recyclable at end of life.
