Muuto Fiber Used Armchair w Gas Lift and Castors, Black
Muuto is the Copenhagen design house behind some of the most recognizable Scandinavian furniture of the last twenty years, and the Fiber series by the Danish duo Iskos-Berlin is one of its best known. Launched in 2014, Fiber takes its name from the shell material: a composite of roughly 25 percent FSC certified wood fiber blended with polypropylene, injection molded in a single piece. The wood content gives the shell a soft matte finish and a warmer, less plasticky feel than a standard molded chair, and Iskos-Berlin’s work is held in collections including MoMA.
This is the full office specification of the Fiber Armchair: the wide molded shell mounted on a black five star aluminum base with castors and a pneumatic gas lift. It is the only version of the Fiber that adjusts, and the seat travels through roughly a five inch range, which covers standard desk height at the bottom and drafting stool territory at the top. The shell sweeps up into integrated armrests molded as part of the same piece, so there is nothing bolted on to work loose.
The rolling five star base is what moves this chair from the dining and lounge category into meeting rooms and workstations. People can pull in to a conference table, turn toward a screen and push back without lifting the chair, and the gas lift means one chair suits a range of table heights. Iskos-Berlin’s shell shape does the ergonomic work: a deep waterfall seat, a curved lumbar zone and arms that meet the forearm naturally. The shell is a single molded piece with no seams to split, it wipes clean with a damp cloth, and the wood fiber composite is fully recyclable. That combination of a durable surface and a genuinely comfortable shaped shell is why the Fiber series turns up in cafeterias, meeting rooms, breakout areas, lobbies and dining spaces alike.
