IKEA Odger Used Side Chair, Anthracite
The Odger is one of the more interesting things IKEA has put into production. It was designed by the Swedish studio Form Us With Love, and instead of the usual moulded polypropylene the shell and legs are made from a wood plastic composite, a material blending recycled wood fibre with recycled plastic. That gives the chair a matte, faintly speckled surface with visible grain, and it means a good share of the material was already in circulation before the chair was made.
This pre-owned unit is finished in anthracite, which in person is a matte black shot through with fine bronze flecks from the wood fibre in the composite. The flecks catch the light up close and give the surface real depth, while across a room the chair reads as a clean, solid black. The seat and back are a single moulded shell with a gentle waist and a curved back that follows the spine, carried on four tapered legs that splay slightly outward. There is no upholstery and no hardware on show. The whole chair is one continuous surface, which is what makes it as easy to wipe down as it is.
Odger has been a fixture in cafes, break rooms, meeting spaces and dining areas because it does several jobs at once. The shell is contoured rather than flat, and the composite surface wipes clean with a damp cloth. IKEA tests the chair to 243 pounds. The tapered leg profile is slim enough that a run of them around a table does not look crowded.
