Herman Miller Sayl Used Task Chair w Aluminum Base, Gray and White
The Sayl is Yves Behar’s answer to a question most task chairs never ask: how little material does a chair actually need to support someone well. Behar and his fuseproject studio looked at the suspension bridges of San Francisco Bay, then built a backrest with no frame around its outer edge at all, held instead by a Y shaped spine and a web of polymer strands under tension. Herman Miller has been building it since 2010, and it has become a fixture in design studios, technology offices, university libraries, and home offices where people want real ergonomics without a wall of levers.
This pre-owned Sayl is finished in a light gray suspension back on a studio white frame, with a gray woven seat and gray arm pads. It rolls on a polished aluminum five star base, which gives the chair a brighter, more finished look than the standard black plastic base and holds up well in rooms where the chair is visible from every side. The Y tower and the arm structures are white, the tilt and height controls sit under the right side of the seat, and the whole chair reads clean and light in a room.
The engineering under the surface is what makes the Sayl worth sitting in. The unframed 3D Intelligent back varies its own tension across the surface, staying firmer where your lumbar needs support and looser at the edges where you need room to twist and reach. There is no separate lumbar pad to fiddle with because the weave itself does that work. Pneumatic height, tilt tension, a recline lock, seat depth adjustment, and height adjustable arms let you dial the chair to your body, and the open back keeps air moving behind you through a long afternoon.
