Base Table by Muuto, White w Black Base
The Finnish designer Mika Tolvanen drew the Base table for Muuto around the idea that a table should be quiet, light enough to move and strong enough to forget about. The frame is slim painted metal with a low cross brace between the legs on each side, and that bracing is what lets a light frame carry a long top without flex. This is the high version, which stands at bar height and is meant for the standing meetings, quick sessions and casual gatherings that take place away from anyone’s desk.
This pre-owned Base high table pairs a white top with a matte black metal frame, a crisp high contrast combination. The top is a hard laminate surface over a plywood core, and the edge is left exposed so a fine band of layered plywood runs around the whole perimeter, giving the pale surface a defined outline against the black frame beneath it. The frame is powder coated matte black, with low stretchers connecting the legs on both sides and a long rail running the length of the table that works as a footrest for anyone standing at it.
The proportions are what make this table useful. At just under 75 inches long and only 19.75 inches deep it is a narrow communal surface, so it fits along a wall, down the center of a break room or across a window without consuming floor space, while still giving several people room to stand along both sides. At 41.25 inches high it lines up with bar stools and standing height seating. The white laminate wipes clean, which matters in a break room or cafe, and the black and white palette works in almost any interior.
