Stripped back to nothing but its frame, this white metal cafe chair is about as simple as commercial seating gets, and that is the point. The entire chair is bent steel rod, welded into a tapered back and a scooped seat and finished in a bright white powder coat. There is no upholstery, no cushion, no veneer, and no plastic shell anywhere on it. That makes it one of the easiest chairs in a building to maintain, and it is why wire seating turns up in cafes, break rooms, courtyards, training rooms, and event spaces that have to be reset and wiped down constantly.
This pre-owned chair shows the design clearly. The lower back is a fan of closely spaced vertical rods that flare outward to follow the curve of a sitter’s back, and the upper back opens into a lattice of diamonds and triangles that gives the chair its recognizable graphic outline. The seat is a shallow scoop built from parallel rods with a cross-brace underneath, and the whole shell sits on a pair of hairpin runners that meet the floor along a continuous line. It measures 19 inches deep by 18.5 inches wide and stands 32 inches to the top of the back.
Because there is nothing on this chair that absorbs anything, cleanup is a wipe with a damp cloth and it is done. Spills go straight through the seat rather than soaking into a pad, which is a real advantage in a break room or a food service area. The powder coat is baked onto the steel rather than sprayed on top of it, so it holds up to bags, shoes, and stacking without flaking. The open frame keeps a room visually light even when it is filled with chairs, and the hairpin runners let the chair slide back from a table without being lifted.
