Teknion has been making office furniture in Toronto since 1983, and because the company grew up inside the open plan systems market rather than adapting to it later, its storage was designed from the outset to live within a workstation instead of standing against a wall. A mobile pedestal like this one shows that thinking throughout. It is proportioned to vanish under a worksurface, finished on every face because it gets seen from all sides in a benching run, and fitted with a cushion top because the floor plans these pieces go into seldom have room for a dedicated guest chair at each position.
This pre-owned Teknion pedestal has a light gray steel case with a light blue patterned fabric cushion fixed to the top and a black molded plastic trim cap across the front of the lid with a recessed finger pull formed into it. A keyed lock sits below the cap in the case front. The configuration is box file: a shallow upper drawer for supplies and a deep lower drawer for hanging folders, with flush drawer faces and integrated pulls. It rolls on four casters, and the file drawer is set up for letter size folders running front to back, which is the orientation that gets the most filing out of a narrow 15 inch case.
The cushion is the piece that separates this one from its darker sibling. The fabric is a mid tone azure ground with a navy grid woven through it in irregular, hand drawn looking lines, so it reads as a light textured blue from across the room and only resolves into pattern up close. A lighter accent like this lifts a gray floor considerably more than a dark navy does, while the broken weave still hides everyday soiling far better than a solid would. At roughly 25 inches high this is one of the taller cushion top pedestals, which makes for a more comfortable perch than the 22 inch cases while still rolling clear under a standard 29 inch worksurface.
