Teknion has been building office furniture out of Toronto since 1983, and it grew up alongside the open plan systems market rather than converting to it, so its storage components were designed from the start to live inside a workstation instead of standing alone against a wall. That shows in a piece like this mobile pedestal. It is sized to disappear under a worksurface, finished on every face because it will be seen from all sides in a benching run, and topped with a cushion because the floor plans Teknion supplies rarely have room for a guest chair at every position.
This pre-owned Teknion pedestal has a light gray steel case with a patterned blue fabric cushion fixed to the top and a black molded plastic trim cap running across the front of the lid, with a recessed finger pull moulded into it. A keyed lock sits below the cap in the case front. The configuration is box file: a shallow upper drawer for supplies and a deep lower drawer for hanging folders, with clean flush drawer faces and integrated pulls. It rolls on four casters. The file drawer is set up to take letter size folders front to back, which is the orientation that gets the most usable filing out of a narrow 15 inch case.
The cushion fabric is worth calling out. It is a deep blue ground with a lighter blue grid woven through it in irregular, hand drawn looking lines, so it reads as texture from across a room and as pattern up close. That is exactly the right choice for a surface people sit on, because a broken pattern hides everyday soiling and wear far better than any solid, light or dark. At roughly 25 inches high this is one of the taller cushion top pedestals, which makes it a more comfortable perch for an adult than the 22 inch cases while still clearing a standard 29 inch worksurface.
