This Steelcase L-shaped sit stand desk with a right return is built on the Series 7 platform, the electric height-adjustable table Steelcase developed through its Details subsidiary, and it belongs to the generation of standing desks that were engineered as real office furniture rather than as an accessory bolted to an existing desk. What makes this particular unit worth attention is the configuration: a full L-shape, corner and all, that rises and falls as one piece. Most sit-stand desks are a single rectangle. This one gives an executive or a heavy multitasker an entire corner workstation that goes to standing height without leaving anything behind on a fixed surface.
This pre-owned unit has an off white high-pressure laminate top with a fine speckled pattern and a soft rolled edge, carried on a black three-leg steel base. The main run measures 24 inches deep by 80 inches wide, with a 24 inch deep by 60 inch wide return on the right. The inside corner is cut with a concave computer corner, the scooped curve that pulls the user in toward the intersection so both wings stay within arm’s reach instead of forcing a chair roll. A black keypad mounts under the front edge with up and down arrows, three numbered preset buttons, and a set button, and a black crossbeam ties the legs together beneath the surface.
Steelcase engineered the Series 7 lift around three-stage synchronized lifting columns with integral shrouding, run from a central control box so all three legs move together and stay level under an uneven load. The columns travel at 1.7 inches per second and stop at any point in the range rather than at fixed steps, and a soft-stop motor eliminates the abrupt starts and jolts that make cheaper lifts unpleasant to use. On the three-leg configuration Steelcase rates a distributed load capacity of 540 pounds, including the worksurface, which is why a full L-shape with monitors, a docking station, and stacks of paper is well within its working range. This unit adjusts from 24.5 inches seated to 51.5 inches standing.
