Steelcase started out in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1912 as the Metal Office Furniture Company, and steel case goods are still where the company’s engineering runs deepest. Its mobile pedestals are the default piece of personal storage on corporate floors because they are built heavier than the job requires and survive being pushed around through reconfiguration after reconfiguration. Adding an upholstered cushion to the top gives that filing pedestal a second job, which is why cushion top pedestals became standard specification for benching and open plan environments where a guest chair at every desk is neither affordable nor practical.
This pre-owned Steelcase pedestal has a taupe steel case with a bright green fabric cushion fitted to the top, satin silver arch pulls on both drawer faces, and a keyed lock in the upper drawer. The configuration is box file: a shallow upper drawer for supplies and personal items, and a deep lower drawer sized for hanging folders. The file drawer interior is finished in black with a full width hanging rail, and it runs on full extension slides so the folders at the back of the drawer stay within reach. It rolls on four casters.
The taupe and green pairing is a warmer specification than the gray on gray version most floors get. Taupe is a soft neutral that sits comfortably against wood laminate and warmer paint colors where a cold gray would look out of place, and the green cushion supplies a genuine accent without needing another piece of furniture to carry it. At roughly 22 and a quarter inches high it rolls cleanly under a standard 29 inch worksurface and sits at a comfortable perch height once it is pulled out, so someone can sit down for a short conversation without you keeping a spare chair in the workstation.
