Description
Steelcase Used 3 Drawer 42 Inch Lateral File, White
Forty two inches is the width you buy when filing volume is the priority. It is a full six inches of extra folder capacity per drawer over the standard 36 inch cabinet, which across three drawers adds up to a meaningful amount of linear filing for a cabinet that still fits under a standard window. Steelcase, building steel office furniture in Grand Rapids since 1912, makes this width to the same specification as the rest of the family, so a 42 inch cabinet can sit in a run beside narrower ones without any visual break.
This pre-owned unit is finished in white and measures 18 inches deep by 42 inches wide by 40 inches high. The case is welded steel with a flush top, a recessed toe kick and three full width drawers spanning the entire cabinet. Each drawer has its own lock, which lets one cabinet hold three independently secured sets of records. The interior is finished in black with steel file rails and adjustable compressors that keep folders standing as a drawer empties.
Width is the whole argument for a lateral file, and at 42 inches that argument is at its strongest. Folders run right to left across the drawer, so the entire contents are visible and reachable the moment it opens. Wide drawers also make the counterweighted base essential, and it is present here, holding the cabinet down when a fully loaded bottom drawer is pulled out to its stop. Leveling glides let it sit flat on uneven flooring.
