This is a Steelcase Airtouch, and it solves the one problem that keeps most sit-stand desks from going where they are needed: it does not plug in. The lifting column is a pneumatic counterbalance rather than a motor, so the desk requires no electricity at all. That means it can sit in the middle of a floor plate, in a room with no floor boxes, in a clinic, in a training room, or anywhere else that running power to a desk would be a project in itself.
This pre-owned unit has a white high-pressure laminate top with softly rounded corners and a slim edge profile, mounted on a single dark center column over a black T-foot base with a brushed metal accent along the spine. Steelcase builds the worksurface as a wood core faced in high-pressure laminate, and the edge is a PVC-free profile. The paddle control sits under the front edge where a standing user can find it without looking. The desk measures 28.25 inches deep by 58 inches wide and adjusts from 26 inches to 43 inches.
The counterbalance does two things a motor cannot. It moves the surface from seated to standing in about 1.2 seconds, which is fast enough that changing posture never feels like an interruption, and it is silent. Steelcase rates the lift at 150 pounds including the weight of the worksurface itself, and the desk stops at any point in its 17 inches of travel rather than at fixed presets. The single center column leaves the entire area under the desk open, and the desk meets or exceeds ANSI/BIFMA standards.
