The Buoy is one of the more genuinely inventive pieces Steelcase Turnstone has produced, and it has become a fixture in offices that took active sitting seriously. From the outside it reads as a simple upholstered drum. In use it behaves nothing like one. The base is weighted and domed rather than flat, so the seat rocks, tilts, and swivels a full 360 degrees under the sitter. That constant low level movement engages the core and keeps the pelvis mobile instead of locking it into one position, which is the whole argument for perch seating in the first place. This pre-owned Buoy features a blue upholstered seat pad on a black body, with the molded carry handle recessed into the side of the shell and the Turnstone tag at the base. Height is adjustable across a 16 to 21 inch range: you twist the top of the stool relative to the base and it threads up or down, so there is no lever, no gas cylinder, and nothing to fail. That range covers everything from a low perch alongside lounge seating to a taller position at a work table. The recessed handle is what makes the piece practical day to day, since a Buoy gets carried between rooms far more often than a conventional chair does.
