Coalesse exists because Steelcase recognized that people were bringing residential expectations into the workplace, and Joel is one of the pieces that answers that. It is a small scale barrel lounge chair on a swivel disc, sized to drop into a private office, a reception corner, a lounge nook or an informal meeting area without taking over the room the way a full club chair does.
This pre-owned Joel is upholstered in charcoal gray woven fabric with a fine two tone weave that reads as a solid from across a room and shows its texture up close. The back sweeps in a full barrel curve and tapers down into low arms, a piped upholstered back rest sits inside that curve, and the seat is one wide cushion carried on a solid upholstered plinth. Underneath, a polished chrome disc swivel base is visible as a slim bright ring at the floor, which is the one piece of hardware the design lets you see.
Joel’s swivel is a self correcting mechanism rather than a free spinning one. The chair rotates smoothly toward whoever is talking and then returns to facing forward when the person gets up, so a lounge grouping keeps its arrangement through the day instead of drifting out of alignment. The barrel back does real ergonomic work as well, wrapping the shoulders so a guest can sit sideways or turn to a neighbor and still be supported, while the low overall height keeps sight lines open across an open plan floor. Woven fabric wears well under constant public use and holds color better than most lighter surfaces.
