Akira is Coalesse’s flip-top nesting table, designed by Christian Cornelius, and it is the most thoroughly engineered table in this category. Coalesse is Steelcase’s design-led brand, and Akira is where that shows: almost every table on the market flips and rolls, but Akira’s mechanism was worked out so carefully that one person can strike an entire room without ever picking a table up or fighting it into position.
This pre-owned unit has a 30 by 60 inch white laminate top on a silver base, with twin posts on curved feet and casters throughout. Set into the top is a powered grommet with a black snap-open lid, and behind that lid are two AC outlets and two open data ports, so a presenter can plug in a laptop and a network or video cable at the surface instead of running cords across the floor. The table measures 30 inches deep by 60 inches wide and stands 28 inches tall.
Two features make Akira worth seeking out. The flip lever is operable with one hand, so you are never wrestling a lever and a tabletop at the same time. And once the top is up, the table swivels on its own axis and the legs pirouette into their nesting position automatically, which lets the tables nest infinitely in a straight line rather than stacking three deep and jamming. Akira tables also gang together, so the same tables that store flat against a wall line up into a continuous conference run.
