Naughtone Used Privacy Lounge Chair, Rust Red
Naughtone is the British studio, now part of the Herman Miller group, that built its name on lounge furniture with a soft residential silhouette and genuine contract construction underneath. This chair is a good example of the approach. The shell curves up and around the sitter into a high wrapping back, which gives you a sense of enclosure without walling you off from the room, and it sits on the thin blackened steel legs that run through much of the Naughtone catalog. Chairs like this go into reception areas, lobby seating groups, breakout zones, quiet corners in open plan offices and executive waiting areas.
This pre-owned chair is upholstered in a rust red woven fabric across the shell, the inside back and the seat cushion. The shell is a single continuous form with a raised band across the top of the back, and the seat is a separate rounded cushion dropped into the bowl of the shell. The base is four slim black powder coated steel legs, splayed and joined by a stretcher at the back, which keeps the visual weight of the chair low and lets it read as light despite its size.
The value of a wrapping back in an open office is acoustic and visual as much as physical. Sitting inside the shell puts material between you and the room on both sides, which cuts distraction and gives a phone call or a one on one conversation somewhere to happen.
