Martin Brattrud Used High Wing Back Chair, Firefinch and Plum
Martin Brattrud has been building upholstered contract seating in Gardena, California since 1946, and the work is made to order for corporate, hospitality and executive interiors. This high wing back chair shows what that kind of shop produces: a deep sculpted shell that curves up into tall enclosing wings, sweeps forward into full height arm panels, and drops into a rounded bowl seat, all built over a hardwood frame and finished by hand. Chairs on this scale anchor executive offices, focus rooms, library lounges, hotel style lobbies, private waiting areas and quiet rooms.
The seat and shell on this chair have been fully reupholstered in new fabric, so the surfaces you sit on and see are brand new even though the chair itself is pre-owned. It carries two coordinated fabrics. The inside back and the inner arm faces are covered in a solid Firefinch, a saturated magenta pink, while the outer shell, the wing edges, the arm tops and the seat cushion are wrapped in a plum tweed shot through with the same pink. The result reads bright and graphic from the front and settles into a deep plum from behind. Underneath, the chair turns on a black four star swivel base with flat blade arms.
The proportions are the point of a chair like this. The wings come forward far enough to close off side traffic and support the head when you lean back, the seat is deep and generously padded, and the swivel lets the sitter turn to face a desk, a window or another chair without moving the piece. The high curved shell also does real acoustic work in an open floor plan, which is why wing chairs keep showing up in focus rooms and quiet zones.
