Knoll has been building furniture since 1938, and its storage components were engineered to the same standard as the seating and systems the company is better known for. A mobile pedestal with a cushioned top is one of the most efficient pieces you can put on an open plan floor because it does two jobs in one footprint. Underneath it is a proper steel filing pedestal with a box drawer for supplies and a full depth file drawer for hanging folders, on casters so it rolls out from beneath a worksurface. On top it is a seat, which matters in benching environments where a colleague needs somewhere to perch for a five minute conversation and there is no room for a dedicated guest chair.
This pre-owned Knoll pedestal has a dark gray steel case with a brand new smoke gray fabric cushion fitted to the top. That is what the RAY in the SKU means: the Knoll case, drawers, and hardware are original, and the cushion has been freshly recovered by our shop, so the seating surface has no wear on it at all. Smoke gray is a smart choice for a top that gets sat on, because a mid tone heathered weave hides everyday soiling far better than either a pale solid or a flat black. The drawer faces are clean and flush with integrated finger pulls rather than protruding handles, and there is a keyed lock in the upper drawer face that secures both drawers.
The proportions are what make this piece work under a desk. At roughly 21 and a half inches high it rolls cleanly beneath a standard 29 inch worksurface and still sits at a comfortable perch height when it is pulled out. The lower drawer takes letter size hanging folders on steel rails, so it does real filing rather than just holding loose paper, and because the unit is mobile it doubles as flexible storage during a reconfiguration: the contents stay in the drawers while the pedestal follows the person to a new seat.
