Knoll Sapper Executive Used Leather Chair, Black
The Knoll Sapper executive chair was designed for Knoll by Richard Sapper, the German industrial designer best known outside the furniture world for the Tizio lamp and for shaping IBM’s ThinkPad. Knoll introduced the Sapper seating series in 1979, and it has stayed in the catalog in one form or another ever since, which almost nothing from that era manages. The reason is that Sapper approached a desk chair as an engineering problem first and a styling exercise second, so the chair is quiet, mechanical, and built to disappear under the person using it rather than announce itself across a room.
This pre-owned Sapper is upholstered in black leather with a black frame and a black five star base on casters. The back is a single continuous form that curves up from the seat and rolls over at the top, with the leather drawn tight over the shell and stitched along the perimeter so the seams follow the curve instead of cutting across it. The arms are closed loops integrated into the shell rather than bolted-on pads, which is part of what gives the chair its uninterrupted profile from the side. The leather has the soft grain and low sheen you get from real hide rather than a coated synthetic.
Underneath the tailoring it is a working office chair. It swivels a full circle, rolls on a five star base, and carries pneumatic seat height adjustment along with tilt tension and a recline lock so the back can be set free or held upright. That combination makes it equally at home behind a desk in a private office and pulled up to a boardroom table.
