Herman Miller Swoop Used Ottoman, Earth Tones
Brian Kane designed the Herman Miller Swoop collection as lounge furniture that works in a commercial building without looking like office furniture. The square ottoman is the most useful piece in the family because it refuses to commit to one job. Push it in front of a lounge chair and it is a footrest. Set it beside a sofa and it is a side table with a tray on top. Group three of them in a lobby and they become casual perch seating. Swoop turns up in reception areas, lounges, waiting rooms, libraries, medical offices and open collaborative zones.
This pre-owned Swoop ottoman is upholstered in a multicolor striped fabric on a black ground, with vertical bands of orange, chartreuse, cream, gray and pale blue running the full height of the piece. The pattern wraps the top and all four sides continuously, and the ottoman sits on four short cylindrical black feet that lift it just clear of the floor. The corners are softly radiused rather than sharp, which is where the collection gets its name.
At two feet square it is large enough to seat an adult comfortably and small enough to move with one hand. The tight upholstery over a firm foam core keeps the surface smooth and neat through constant use, and the patterned weave is genuinely practical in a public space because it keeps looking fresh through daily use. The low height reads as an accent piece and keeps sightlines open across the room.
