Herman Miller Setu Used Side Chair, Graphite
The Setu family came from Studio 7.5, a Berlin team that set out to build a chair which fits a person the moment they sit rather than after a round of adjustments. The answer was a spring steel spine that flexes on its own, and Herman Miller has been producing the result since 2009. This is the armed side chair on a base that stays put, the configuration that suits conference tables, training rooms, reception areas and guest seating in private offices.
This pre-owned unit is finished in graphite, a dark charcoal that reads almost black across the room and shows a subtle weave up close. The Lyris suspension runs as one continuous surface from the front lip of the seat up over the top of the back, framed by a matching black shell with black loop arms, and mounted on a four star aluminum base. The aluminum is the only bright element on the chair, which gives it a grounded, understated look that works well in rooms with darker finishes.
Comfort here comes from structure, not from cushioning. Two spring steel ribbons behind the back flex as your weight moves, so the chair leans with you and comes back as you sit forward, with the tension already balanced by design. The suspension seat carries your weight across its whole surface rather than pressing into a few points, and because the weave is open it moves air instead of holding heat. Setu is engineered to come apart for recycling at end of life, which is one reason it holds its place in offices with material and waste targets.
