Herman Miller Setu Used Side Chair, Alpine
Setu is Herman Miller’s answer to the meeting room chair that nobody adjusts. Studio 7.5 in Berlin built the family around a spring steel spine that reacts the moment a person sits down, which meant the controls could come off entirely. This is the armed side chair, on a base that holds its position, and it is the version that most often ends up around a conference table, in a training room, in reception, or as the guest chair in a private office.
This pre-owned unit is finished in Alpine, a light warm gray that works against nearly any wall and any wood tone. The Lyris suspension runs as one continuous surface from the front of the seat up over the top of the back, framed by a white shell with matching white loop arms, and mounted on a four star aluminum base. The arms are formed as a single sweeping loop rather than bolted on, so they read as part of the frame and give the chair a more finished profile from the side.
The chair works because of what happens behind you. Two spring steel ribbons run up the back and flex as your weight shifts, so the back leans with you and returns when you come forward, with the tension already engineered rather than left to a knob. The suspension seat spreads pressure evenly instead of concentrating it, and the open weave keeps air moving, which is what makes a chair like this comfortable through a two hour meeting. Setu is built to be taken apart and recycled at the end of its service life.
