Herman Miller Setu Used Mesh Stool, Alpine
Setu came out of Studio 7.5 in Berlin, a team that spent years working out how a chair could respond to a person without asking that person to operate it. The result was a chair with almost no controls that still moves the moment you sit down. Herman Miller extended the idea into a stool for the places where people work standing or perch: lab benches, standing height meeting tables, reception counters, studio work surfaces, and the tall tables that show up in almost every collaborative space built in the last fifteen years.
This pre-owned Setu stool is finished in Alpine, a light warm gray, with the Lyris suspension running as one continuous surface from the front of the seat up over the top of the back. The frame and the loop arms are white, the five star base and the foot ring are aluminum, and the stool rolls on casters. The pneumatic cylinder gives a wide seat height range, so the same stool works at a counter and at a full standing height bench.
Setu’s Kinematic Spine does the ergonomic work here. Two spring steel ribbons run up the back of the chair and flex as your weight shifts, so the stool leans when you lean and comes back when you sit forward, with the tension already balanced for you. There is nothing to set and nothing to remember. The Lyris suspension spreads pressure evenly across the whole seat rather than concentrating it, and the open weave breathes, which matters when you are up and down off the stool all day. The foot ring gives you somewhere to rest your feet at the taller settings, which is what keeps a stool comfortable past the first hour.
