Herman Miller Setu Used Mesh Chair, Alpine
Setu was Herman Miller’s answer to a question every modern office runs into: what do you sit in when you are only at the desk for twenty minutes? Designed by Studio 7.5 in Berlin, it throws out levers and knobs entirely and replaces them with a spring steel spine that reads your posture and responds on its own. The result is a chair that suits touchdown desks, conference rooms, home offices, private offices and collaborative areas, where people sit down, work, and move on.
This pre-owned Setu is finished in Alpine, a light warm gray, with the same Lyris suspension material forming both the seat and the back in one continuous surface. The frame, fixed loop arms and five star base are graphite black, and the chair rides on casters. The seat and back are woven suspension stretched across the frame from the front edge of the seat up over the top of the back.
The Kinematic Spine is what makes Setu work without controls. Two ribbons of spring steel run up the back of the chair and flex as you shift, letting the whole frame bend with you and then return. Because the seat and back are one piece of suspension, the chair also moves with you, and the Lyris material breathes so heat keeps moving away over the course of an afternoon. Pneumatic height adjustment is the only setting to make, which is exactly the point in a shared or drop in seat.
