Herman Miller Setu Used Armless Side Chair, Chartreuse Green
Setu is what happens when a design team decides that the person sitting down should not have to operate the chair. Studio 7.5 in Berlin built the whole family around a spring steel spine that responds the instant weight lands on the seat, and Herman Miller has been producing it since 2009. The side chair version puts that behavior on a base that stays where you put it, which makes it the version that goes into conference rooms, training rooms, reception areas, private offices and dining spaces where a chair needs to hold its place rather than roll.
This pre-owned unit is finished in chartreuse, a bright yellow green that reads as a genuine accent color. The Lyris suspension runs as one continuous surface from the front lip of the seat up over the top of the back, framed by a graphite black shell, and it sits on a four star aluminum base. It is armless, so the seat is clean on all sides and the chair slides fully under a table between meetings.
The engineering is the same in this chair as in the task version. The Kinematic Spine flexes as you shift, so the back gives when you lean into it and comes back as you sit forward, with the tension already balanced. There is nothing to set. The suspension seat spreads your weight evenly instead of concentrating it under the thighs, and because the weave is open rather than padded, it breathes through a long meeting. Setu is also one of the more recyclable chairs Herman Miller builds, which is part of why it turns up in offices with real sustainability targets.
