Herman Miller Setu Used Armless Side Chair, Blue
Setu is one of the quieter successes in Herman Miller’s catalog. Studio 7.5 spent years working out a back that would respond to a person without being told to, landed on a pair of spring steel ribbons, and built the entire family around them. The side chair version rides on a base that holds its position, which is why it ends up in conference rooms, training rooms, reception areas, break spaces and guest seating rather than at a desk.
This pre-owned unit wears a deep blue Lyris suspension, a color with real depth and presence, set into a black shell and mounted on a four star aluminum base. The weave runs as one continuous surface from the front edge of the seat up and over the top of the back, and the armless build leaves the seat open on both sides so the chair slides fully under a table when the meeting ends.
What you feel when you sit is the Kinematic Spine. The steel ribbons flex under your weight, so the back gives as you lean and comes back as you shift forward, and because the tension is engineered rather than adjustable there is nothing to set before the chair fits you. The suspension seat spreads pressure across its whole surface instead of concentrating it behind the knees, and the open weave keeps air moving rather than holding heat. Setu is built to be taken apart and recycled, which is part of why it has stayed in production so long.
