Herman Miller’s Setu was designed by Studio 7.5 around a single mechanical idea: a spring steel spine that reacts to a person’s weight and posture on its own. That idea removed the need for tension knobs, back stops and lumbar dials, and it left a chair that is comfortable the moment someone sits down. On a five star caster base with pneumatic height adjustment, this version handles desk work, conference rooms, and shared or hot desk seating.
This pre-owned unit pairs a light gray upholstered suspension with a white frame and a polished aluminum five star base. The upholstery is a woven cover over the Lyris suspension, so the surface reads as soft fabric while the weave underneath carries the load. The white and aluminum combination is the brightest finish Setu comes in, and it works particularly well in light rooms, white benching, and spaces where the furniture is meant to recede. The armless build keeps the seat open on both sides and lets the chair tuck all the way under a work surface.
The Kinematic Spine is what makes the chair feel different from a conventional task chair. Two spring steel ribbons flex as your weight shifts, so the back leans with you and returns as you come forward, with the tension engineered rather than adjusted. The suspension spreads pressure evenly across the seat instead of concentrating it, and because the seat and back are one continuous curve there is no hard front edge under your thighs. Pneumatic height is the only control, so nobody needs to be shown how to use it.
