The Herman Miller Caper was designed by Jeff Weber and introduced in 2000 as a stacking chair that could hold its own in a meeting that ran long. Herman Miller engineered it to deliver seated comfort and compact storage together: a flexing perforated polymer back, a suspension seat and a frame slim enough to nest. Herman Miller built it for training rooms, classrooms, cafeterias and conference spaces, and it has stayed in the line for more than two decades, which is unusual for a chair in this category.
This pre-owned Caper has a fog blue perforated polymer back, a black suspension mesh seat and a black four leg steel tube frame with fixed arms. The back shell is punched with a graduated field of round perforations, dense at the center and opening up toward the edges, which lets the panel flex where the spine meets it while staying rigid at the perimeter. A molded hand slot at the top edge gives a natural place to grip when the chair is carried or repositioned. The mesh seat is stretched across a fog blue frame so the sitter’s weight is carried on suspension rather than foam.
The suspension seat is the detail people notice. Because it is a tensioned mesh panel, it distributes weight across the whole surface and lets air pass straight through. Paired with the flexing back, it gives the Caper a supportive, ventilated seat for the length of a training session or a long meeting. The chairs stack for storage between uses, and the fog blue and black combination is quiet enough to work in almost any room.
