The Haworth Improv HE task chair sits at the heart of Haworth’s long running Improv family, and it earned its place in corporate offices, government buildings, universities, and healthcare settings by being one of the most thoroughly adjustable chairs of its generation. Haworth built the Improv H.E. around the idea that a single chair should fit a whole floor of different people, so almost every contact point on it moves. Decades later these chairs are still in service, which says more about the build quality than any spec sheet can.
This pre-owned Improv H.E. is finished in warm taupe upholstery on a gray frame, with a gray plastic outer back shell, gray arm posts and arm caps, and an all gray five star base. The back is a rounded upholstered pad carried on a pair of steel uprights, so it floats slightly away from the seat and follows you when you shift. The seat is a wide contoured cushion with a rolled front edge, and the adjustment paddles and knobs sit right under the front and side of the seat where you can find them without looking.
What sets this chair apart in daily use is the inflatable lumbar system. Rather than a fixed foam bump, you pump air into the lumbar bladder until the curve matches your own back, then let air out as you like. Add back height adjustment, seat depth adjustment, tilt tension, a recline lock, and height adjustable arms with pivoting flipper pads, and the chair can be dialed in for a small user and then reset for a tall one in about a minute. That is the reason facilities managers kept buying them.
