FireKing Used 3 Drawer 38 Inch Lateral File, Tan
FireKing has been building fire resistant filing in Chicago since 1951, and the company is a standard specification when documents have to survive a building fire. The engineering is straightforward and it is why these cabinets weigh what they do: a gypsum based insulating core is cast into the walls, the top, the base and every drawer front, and the barrier continues between the drawers as well as around the shell. FireKing files carry a UL Class 350 one hour rating, meaning the interior stays below 350 degrees Fahrenheit through a one hour test fire, which is the threshold at which paper begins to char. They also carry the UL impact rating, tested by heating the cabinet and dropping it thirty feet onto rubble to simulate a floor collapse.
This pre-owned unit is a three drawer lateral in tan, with the FireKing badge on the top drawer front, exterior mounted metal handles, and a key lock at the top right of the case. The keys are included and shown on the tag in the photos. Each drawer files letter and legal documents side to side across the full width, and the drawers are set up for hanging folders.
Three drawers at this width is a practical size for an active records area. It puts a solid run of protected filing at a height where every drawer is easy to reach standing up, and the top of the case works as a staging surface for sorting. FireKing laterals also use a drawer interlock so one drawer opens at a time, which keeps the cabinet from becoming unstable when it is loaded and someone pulls the top drawer out fully.
