Emeco 111 Navy Used Cafe Chair, Persimmon
The Emeco 111 Navy Chair has a genuinely unusual origin story for a piece of office furniture. Emeco built the original Navy Chair in 1944 out of aluminum, to a US Navy specification calling for a chair that could survive salt water, torpedo blasts, and life aboard a submarine. In 2010 Emeco reissued that silhouette in a new material in partnership with Coca-Cola: each chair is molded from 111 recycled PET beverage bottles, which is exactly where the model name comes from. The result keeps the instantly recognizable Navy Chair profile, with its rounded back frame and three vertical spindles, in a form that costs less, weighs less, and diverts plastic from the waste stream.
This pre-owned 111 Navy is finished in persimmon, the warm red orange in Emeco’s palette, running across the entire chair. Because the piece is molded in a single continuous form from pigmented recycled PET reinforced with glass fiber, the color runs all the way through the material rather than sitting on top as paint. Chips and scratches do not expose a different colored substrate underneath, which is a real advantage on cafe seating that gets stacked, dragged, and knocked into table legs daily. The chair is armless with a lightly dished seat and cross bracing between the four legs. Measurements are 19 inches deep by 15.5 inches wide by 34.5 inches high.
The 111 Navy was engineered to be UV stabilized and weather resistant, which is why it is rated for outdoor as well as indoor use. For a cafe, break room, or patio, that means one chair can move between a courtyard and an interior dining area without a second thought. The material is non porous, so it wipes down with a damp cloth and does not absorb spills or odors the way an upholstered or wood seat does. At around nine pounds, a single person can rearrange a room full of them, which matters in flexible spaces that get reset for different uses through the day.
