Emeco 111 Navy Used Cafe Chair, Green
The Emeco 111 Navy Chair carries one of the more interesting histories in commercial seating. Emeco built the original Navy Chair in 1944 out of aluminum, to a US Navy specification demanding a chair that could survive salt water, torpedo blasts, and daily life aboard a submarine. In 2010 Emeco reissued that silhouette in a new material in partnership with Coca-Cola: every chair is molded from 111 recycled PET beverage bottles, which is precisely where the model number comes from. The reissue preserves the instantly recognizable Navy Chair profile, with its rounded back frame and three vertical spindles, in a version that costs less, weighs less, and keeps plastic out of the waste stream.
This pre-owned 111 Navy features a green finish across the whole chair. Because the piece is molded in one continuous form from pigmented recycled PET reinforced with glass fiber, the color runs through the material rather than sitting on the surface as paint. Chips and scratches do not reveal a different colored substrate beneath, which is a meaningful advantage on cafe seating that gets dragged across floors and knocked into table legs every day. The chair is armless with a lightly dished seat and stretchers bracing all four legs. Measurements are 19 inches deep by 15.5 inches wide by 34.5 inches high.
Emeco engineered the 111 Navy to be UV stabilized and weather resistant, so it is rated for outdoor use as well as indoor. For a cafe, break room, or courtyard, that means the same chair can move between an exterior patio and an interior dining area without any concern about fading or degrading. The material is non porous, so it wipes down with a damp cloth and will not absorb spills or odors the way upholstery or untreated wood does. At roughly nine pounds, one person can rearrange an entire room of them, which is what you want in a flexible space that gets reset several times a day.
